When it comes to air freight shipments, understanding chargeable weight is important. Chargeable weight is determined by comparing the actual (gross) weight and the volumetric (dimensional) weight of your shipment, using whichever is greater. This method is essential because it reflects how much space your package occupies on an aircraft.
For instance, large items that are lightweight tend to occupy more space than smaller, heavier items. This discrepancy is why airlines base their charges on chargeable weight rather than just the actual weight. To calculate volumetric weight, simply measure your package's dimensions in inches (length x width x height) to get cubic inches. You then divide this number by 166 to convert it to dimensional weight in pounds.
Once you have the dimensional weight, you can determine your shipping costs: multiply by $6.99/lb for low-value products and $11.99/lb for high-value products. Keep in mind that there is a minimum shipment charge of $85.
Products priced under $200 are considered low value, while those priced at $200 and above are classified high value.
